Morgan Creek Preserve and Dedication

03.28.07

Many of us drive over the mundane bridge near the intersection of 15/501 south and Culbreth Rd and Mt. Carmel Church Road every day and don’t notice the small sign dedicating it to James Taylor. I for one always thought it was pointless to make him attend a ceremony for a typical, boring overpass. Now I get it. The woodland area called “copperline” by Taylor is actually Morgan Creek land and has been dedicated as green space in Chapel Hill. Future plans call for it to connect walking trails with Fan Branch Trail towards Southern Village and on to the new Southern Community Park. It’s a large parcel of land that includes a 92 acre preserve along the creek from Merritt Pasture ( you know that beautiful pasture we can’t use because they don’t allow parking) to the Chapel Hill town limit on Smith Level Road. Several years ago I heard it was also going to connect to UNC campus, some how. That would be great exercise after a stroll to Ben and Jerrys.
